World of Warships - Quick Cut: Tier VI American Aircraft Carrier USS Indpendence (Ranked Gameplay)
I am generally not a very good carrier player; this game in Tier VI's USS Independence is no exception. The new American aircraft carrier branch has drawn rave reviews from some circles, but I'm not seeing it yet. Independence has some things going for her for sure - like the fact she can take the crazy CV stealth skill and not really hurt herself too badly - but her planes feel less capable than those of Ranger.

      ​​@@SeaRaptor, you get decent XP for fighter kills. Independence rockets are just terrible. Maybe only useful against cruisers. Your most useful tactical squadron is the HE bombers. The hilarious thing about Independence to me is how fast her tactical squadrons come back. You just have infinite planes that do pinprick damage. Yorktown has smoke, but her planes do a lot more damage...

      Honestly, at the point we are pushing him, his death is almost guaranteed. He can delay things or possibly get lucky with torpedoes, but that's about it. He MIGHT have been able to torpedo charge me through the smoke. My AP shells are not able to get module incaps on his torpedo tubes, so it's possible he survives to wipe me out at close range. That probably would have been his best bet; try and use the smoke to lure me in close and hope my hydro is offline. But it's a slim chance.

    York is really easy to play effectively and comfortably in ranked. I think its mostly the guns ballistics, range, pen, and fire starting. It's a comparatively tanky hull too...Maybe I just like it more than I should...

      Kagero is 5.4km detection with Concealment Expert on the commander and Concealment Systems Modification 1 in slot 5.

    My back has been making my life miserable for the last few weeks, no way I could manage watching the stream after a day of yesterdayu. Watching the morning after, as usual. Doesn't Tiger '59 have smoke and radar . . . I'll admit, it's a Tiger '59, soooo . . . . . Buffalo . . . bwahaha. An extra turret and the heal makes Buffalo a solid improvement over Balti IMO. I farm well in the Balti . . . Buffalo after four games is a huge improvement! - wow . . . that cammo is harsh! Oh, Raptor, you don't like Florida . . . but some of us can get something out of her. She's not my favorite ship, but my scores and farming are good in her. How you play the game is SO important in how well you play vessels of certain classes/nations/style. As a rule I like light cruisers and play most of them well. However, I tend to like cruisers with good guns and good torps and better than average speed. The Pan-American cruisers have been a great line for me . . . premiums Maya and Abruzzi and Wukong and Napoli are more fun for me than most and my scores are above my average in all of them. Saying that, let's talk Cleveland and Baltimore. Both US cruisers, both considered very good ships, both a bit slow and no torps. At Tier VI and VII I found that I consistently scored better in US heavies . . . they became one of my best-scoring standard ships at those tiers. However, at Tier VIII I find that my Baltimore numbers are 50-75% better across the board than my Cleveland numbers . . . Cleveland and I are not friends and I am only playing her at this point to get to Seattle>Worchester>Jacksonville. Meanwhile, I now have Buffalo and am scoring outrageous numbers in her! I play Cleveland and Balti at mid ranged, avoid torps and switch between AP and HE as necessary. How is it that I cannot get good scores in the Cheatland?! Gotta be the way I play her.

    shiptool has just added server stats for each server. Players are grouped together in skill brackets and on NA 38% of the player population has a win rate greater than 51%. What's interesting is at one point this month they listed 9,714 players within the top 51% who played the new Dockyard ship Wisconsin during the last 3 updates. Which means that 9,714 players represent at least 38% of a total player population of 25,563. Because 9,714 is 38% of 25,563. Currently they have top 51% players at 6,555 who played the Wisconsin but that's still at least 38% of a total player population of 17,250 on NA.

    I think they moved the last FXP ships to coal because they wanted to get rid of the FXP-as-currency. The new FXP ships are the Research Bureau ships, which are much more expensive of course. Smaland was 2 million FXP, that only gets you 1/3rd of a T10 RB ship. So the Research Bureau is really just a FXP sink.

      NA regularly gets mostly bot filled games at tier 5 IN PRIME TIME. Queue times for tier 10 games are increasing in my experience too.

    The Battle On button is the best thing WG has done in years. Unfortunately, I can't really think of anymore positive things. They've completely wrecked the economy, as a mostly free to play player I can't really afford to run full signals in every battle, they've become very stingy with the dispensing of free signals, so mostly I have to save them for Ranked and other important battles. Also, another annoying thing is that every time a new ship comes out, an older ship seems to get power crept to hell, which basically forces everyone to chase the new ships.

      Power creep is a real issue in games this old, and for sure some older content feels a little rough. The nice thing is that there are still a lot of tech tree and early premium ships that are still very relevant and playable, and solid cash-makers to boot. Atago is an easy example, but there are others.

      @@SeaRaptor I love Atago. I still enjoy Alaska a lot, as well. Problem with T8/9 is getting uptiered and inevitably getting curb stomped. But, for example GK is unplayable in randoms right now. I hate to be that guy, but GK and a few others need some buffs.

    Low tier no fun always double uptiered high tier is a stale camping party where as soon as spotted 5 bbs with overmatch delete u I really struggle to have fun maybe 1 out of 10 matches slow down on new lines focus on balance and fix mm equal radars power creep is killing older lines to the point of being unplayable

      An... oddly interesting comparison. I will say that I suspect these guns are going to be more useful, though. The IJN lights are basically torpedo cruisers with some slow-reloading 152mm guns added as an afterthought. Jax is very much an "all-gun" cruiser with a correspondingly quick reload to go with it.

I like the more casual amount of FL's you presented, it makes them less robotic and forced in concept. Heck yeah, you get excited like this and want to pop out an extra, sheesh, what a shame that would be. I might even spit my whiskey out in shock. (Never mistreat a good bourbon). If you're enjoying doing them, we definitely are in watching them. It pleases me big time to place you once again at the first choice of First Looks. All the effort is appreciated.

    Hey bro it's me I tiered up! I watched your video about this ship and I followed your advice, EXCEPT 1 thing, I chose the RANGE upgrade! the lead times are ridiculous but wow, I gotta tell ya, being able to shoot at 18 kilometers away feels amazing!😂She's a beast up close (under 15kilos) away but without proper armor you don't survive for too long.

      The range upgrade is not a bad way to play the ship. I find the shells quite difficult to lead at max range, but the appeal of having what amounts to an American Hindenburg is real. I've played the ship in this configuration and it absolutely works.

    I faced Jacksonville about a week or two ago in a Schlieffen and I won’t lie, it gave me war flashbacks to the 2019 Smolensk days. Really not looking forward to facing this ship more in battle in the future.

    Glad your back and hope your doing good. Having said that, I won't be watching any new vids of first look from you if they don't follow with gameplay supporting the things you suggest in the same video. WG is very good @ selling ships that claim to be good against stuff but then they aren't. Friesland and Groningen come to mind AA wise and there are many more such examples. I love playing Wows even from CB but gameplay promoting improvements have been lacking AA being one of those imho.

      As a DD-fancier myself, I do sometimes miss how bad flooding was. But I like how the re-design of it makes it still hurt without being a death sentence. Multiple flooding zones also helps from the DD side of things.

      @@SeaRaptor What if WG removed 1 or 2 charges of DFAA globally across all ships, but made it so DFAA deletes all planes in AA range. No extra damage or ramp up, just 100 to 0 for all planes in the AA bubble. Thoughts?

      It would feel good for the surface ship and terrible for the CV. I doubt WG would go for it. No other class in the game has a get-out-of-jail-free card. If I had a "ignore all damage for 15 seconds" button as a destroyer, people would call it broken. That's basically what you're suggesting.

    Pleased to see this segment back, even if only in a limited capacity. Between you and LWM, I could reliably determine what new ships were worth considering, so here's to having fewer "He has chosen....poorly." moments in ship purchasing! One thing about the ship that bothers me is the forward main battery FC radar. Behind what would probably end up being Mount 63 in USN parlance, is NOT where you would site that particular piece of gear.

    Cleveland is somewhat a no-fly-zone ship, I have not played Seattle and Worcester and idk about them, but imo Cleveland got strong AA. o7

      Cleve has always had great AA. But both Seattle and Worcester pushes their AA range out to 6.9km. And Worcester in particular becomes extremely deadly at 4km, with its 3" autoloader AA guns providing an unholy AA DPS. Now throw in DFAA to all this. Before the CV rework in version 8.0, a full AA-build Worcester could feature a DPS of over 3,000. There is footage of it completely deplaning 3 Hakuryus at the exact same time with relatively minimal damage to itself in the process. So yeah-Worcester is possibly the best support cruiser in the game. Excellent RoF, consumables aplenty, awesome AA range and DPS, and a LU that makes all of this better (+1 to all consumables, reduces consumable cooldown by 20%, reduces AA priority sector by 20%)

    Im a bit skeptical for sure, didn't everyone say the exact same thing about Des Moines AA back in the day ...... Halland? How big of a threat are those ships to a decent CV player now days?! So what happened to their "strong AA"?! They seem like a cruel joke. My absolute best AA ship in my port by far today is Golden Lion with half AA build (he can usually negate any CV drops). Does Nakhimov squads even enter mid-range AA bubble? But I guess we all have to wait and see exactly how strong this will be upon release but going by history for the last 8-9 years WG haven't really been interested in making enemies out of the CV mains. Also dont forget the so-called upcoming CV spotting/AA rework. Its a chance "strong AA" will be pretty useless in the future depending how the outcome of that "balancing" will land. IF I would buy this in the future the "strong mid range AA" wont be a factor.

      Des Moines' AA is pretty solid; I have games on my channel where I slaughtered well over 40 Midway planes in a DM. Most people's impression of DM's AA stems from the pre-CV rework era when the ship was literally untouchable with DFAA active. It isn't now, but it sure does murder planes good given the opportunity with a little investment on the captain. Murdering planes in Warships is really easy with a small investment in points, some heads up play, and a CV player who wants to mess with you. With all of that said, Jacksonville's base AA is nearly double that of Des Moines. DM's middle bubble is 417 DPS; Jax's is 882. Jax's long-range goes out to 6.9km; DM's stops at 5.8. Jax puts up more flak. Jax's long-range bubble is about 30% better in regular DPS (133 vs. 105). Gouden Leeuw's mid-range aura is 536 out to 3.5km; Jax's is 882 out to 4.0km... a 65% increase plus more range (which means more time spent in it). There's no ship in the game that comes close to putting out this kind of mid-range aura. The Dutch are the closest, but even they are over 200 points behind; De Zeven Provincien's 672 out to 4.0km is the closest analogue, and if you've ever had a CV try to mess with you in that ship, you start to get an inkling of what Jax is capable of. D7P devours planes. So should Jax. The RU CV's break all the regular rules of how AA works, so I can't defend that. It was a stupid design decision by WG at the time and remains so. Against regular carriers - or even RU strikes that have to come into your AA bubble, like Chkalov's dive bombers - they'll be lucky to survive to drop you, much less go home again. FDR *might* have a shot, but I think this thing would give even FDR fits.

      @@SeaRaptor I feel like I see a lot of abused Des Moines and Hallands these days up to the point where I suspected WG has done some shady behind the curtains nerfs to them recently. But that must just be players misplaying and misusing AA all the time then.

      Far be it for me to contradict your feelings. For the past five-plus years AA has been simple math, easy to understand (the bigger the numbers, the better) and easy to verify in-game (as the UI visually shows you the damage numbers going in on the planes just like it does with shells). Damage verification requires some effort - because the damage lands so quickly and the planes are in constant motion - and some knowledge about the opposing CV's skills - because that affects the math - but can easily be verified in a training room. PTS builds are so heavily data-mined, I've no idea how we wouldn't notice a nerf to base AA values on high-tier ships. WG even got away from the flawed system that awarded XP and cash for only the plane kill ribbons and now rewards simply overall AA damage. This makes AA builds more financially rewarding than ever... presuming you can get a CV in your game. My thoughts on AA in Warships over the past nine years boil down to some pretty simple observations: 1. Some players got used to the old AA system, which was RNG-based and comically unbalanced. 2. Many of those same players didn't like that they could no longer become immune to CVs in the new system, which therefore made the new system "broken". (I'm talking post-0.8.5 here, because between 0.8.0 and 0.8.5 AA was total garbage.) 3. CV players are nearly always going to take the commander skills that buff plane health and reduce incoming AA damage, but too many surface ship players never invest a single point into their AA. Thus, they start even farther behind the math than they would have otherwise. 4. As a result, such surface ship players convince themselves that AA is worthless, never having actually attempted to use any of the commander skills or modules (or consumables) that would have improved the math equations that enable them to murder planes faster. None of this is meant to gloss over the fact that taking skills and modules that buff your AA has an opportunity cost. They always have, and there's an argument to be made that such an opportunity cost is higher than ever now that subs are around (i.e. taking DFAA over hydro might end up being a death sentence depending on matchmaking). I have no interest in defending WG's class design and balancing decisions, because I frequently disagree with them. But since June 2019, AA has worked exactly as it should have since the game's release. It's a simple-to-understand system that underpins a much more complex, emotional interaction with the CV player (the feeling of being attacked without being able to fight back). I would argue that one of WG's greatest design failures in Warships is allowing that CV/surface ship interaction into the game at all; that despite the historical significance of aircraft carriers, *players* in a *PvP game* do not enjoy being unable to retaliate against the player who is attacking them.

      I doubt that. Her main battery is hilariously fun, and that's why you really pick this thing up. But the AA bubble is nutty. I can't wait to laugh at the opposing CV player who tries to drop me with something while driving this ship.
